DIGITAL IMAGE FX INC. AND US AIR FORCE COMPLETE THE WORLD'S FIRST LOW ORBIT SATELLITE CONNECTION BETWEEN AN AIRBORNE PLATFORM AND GROUND UNIT (AIR SAT 1)
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia - December 3, 1998
In April of this year, Digital Image FX Inc. was established as a US military test site for satellite communications. The first Low Earth Orbit (LEO) system to be tested was Iridium. Last week, Digital hosted several leaders of the Civil Disaster Community at TARA. Iridium, Motorola and Allied Signal Aerospace demonstrated publicly for the first time AIR SAT 1.
The call was placed from Allied's business jet over the New Hampshire area through the Iridium Communication Grid to the TARA boardroom, marking the world's first demonstration of this technology from an airborne platform. Digital will be continuing the testing of Iridium and broader band satellite systems as necessary. Digital Image operates under a memorandum of understanding with the US Air Force and maintains a technology transfer agreement with NASA.
